~Summer Vacation on the Fly Changes~

Well we all know what happens to best laid plans right?  Yup, they tank.  So with some anger and frustration at first, we had some changes to our vacation plans.  It has evened out now to acceptance and gratitude with some time to reflect on it.

So it started out with a plan to take Ethan to the zoo last Monday.  It didn’t happen.  The weather was so murky and unpredictable that we didn’t want to be caught in the rain or rush to get through because of the rain.  So Randy headed home on Monday after we did some clothes shopping for him and Ethan and I detoured to St. Albert to visit our friend Mike.  After that we headed home for GP.

We spent all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning getting ready for our camping trip.  We were all looking so forward to it!!!  We hit the road in the afternoon on Wednesday and got as far as the Home Depot when we pulled over.  Something wasn’t working right with the trailer brakes.  So we stopped in the parking lot, borrowed some tools (gotta love the perks of the job!) and Randy took a look at it.  He decided the controller was broken and so he went and bought a new one and changed it out.  It didn’t help.  So he tore apart the truck connection thinking it was the problem.  He saw that the ground wire was in rough shape so he cleaned it up and reconnected it.  It still didn’t work properly.  In the meantime he checked the tire pressure on the trailer and noticed that on one of the tires it was missing 3 of the 6 lug nuts that holds the tire on.  How on earth that happened is beyond us!  Since we knew the brakes on the trailer worked (our friends had taken it out the weekend before) we knew the problem was the truck we were borrowing from Randy’s work.  The result?  No camping trip.  We had no other vehicle we could borrow and didn’t want to take the trailer out with the tire in that condition.  So we turned around (me sniffling and crying…) and headed home.  What had taken a day and a half to pack up took less then an hour to unpack.  We were both upset and frustrated.  We have had our RV for 7 years making payments and haven’t had an opportunity to use it for the last 5years!  So we’ve made payments for 5 years without using it!!!

It is no ones’ fault, just very frustrating for us all.   We were just happy that Ethan didn’t understand what was going on so he wasn’t disappointed as well.

We wallowed in self-pity for a few hours then decided to make the best of it.  We made plans for the rest of the week!

On Thursday we took Ethan to see Cars 2, his first movie theatre experience!  He didn’t do very well.  He didn’t want to sit down and wasn’t that interested in the movie and then fell asleep 20 minutes before the end.  Little turkey!  We went off to Fatburger for a yummy late lunch after the movie.  That night we took Ethan to the public swim at the pool and had fun splashing in the pool.

On Friday we decided that since we ended up paying for the campsite (when I cancelled my reservation I only got back $16 of the $69 it cost me, grrr!) that we would head there for the day.  So we packed up a cooler of food, a bag of clothes, towels and bug spray and hit the road.  A separate post and pictures will follow but suffice to say we had a BLAST!  We left at 9:30am and got home around 9:30pm and we all had lots of fun and made some cool memories!

Today we hung out.   Ethan and I did crafts, a separate post and pics to follow, and Randy went to see Harry Potter at the theatre.  I went and got my hair cut this afternoon to get ready for our family pics tomorrow and stopped by the store to pick up a few things.  We had a yummy BBQ steak supper (fish for Ethan) and are spending the evening putzing around.  Randy and Ethan took off to the park to play while I was getting my hair cut.

Church, pictures and getting ready to return to work are on the agenda for tomorrow.  This two weeks has been wonderful!  I’m looking forward to getting back into my routine again as I’m getting a little restless at home but it sure has been a great time with my guys!

I’m just happy that we were able to take the lemons we were handed and make awesome lemonade!  It was a lesson to us…there is always a reason for everything that happens.  Just let it happen.
