~Our Holiday Road Trip!~

Our plan from there was to turn around and head for home.  Then Randy saw another lake on the map…Dinosaur lake, and another one just past it.  We decided to head off to explore them as they were close to Hudson’s Hope.  That is where our adventure took off!  Here is a link to a map of the trip we ended up doing…531 km and 12 hours later we got home!

We stopped off at Dinosaur Lake and it is gorgeous there!  The campground sucked though…we stopped at the Peace Canyon Dam and let Ethan stretch his legs…

We hit the road from there to see the other lake, Williston Lake.  Its HUGE on the map and we thought that there may be some great camping there.  Well what we came up to was a guarded gate.  We stopped, rolled down the window and discovered that we had stumbled on one of the World’s Largest Earth filled dams, the W.A.C. Bennett Dam.  The security guards suggested we take the tour…we thought what the heck and did it!  It was around 45 minutes and they take you 500 and some feet underground so you can see the internal workings of the dam and explain how it works.  There is also a short film on the building of the dam which I thought was neat!  No cameras were allowed on the tour but we took some shots of the dam and reservoir afterwards.  It is very pretty!  It cost us a whopping $13.56 for the tour and we got some cool history on the area and saw a Bald Eagle!

We left the dam and headed back through Hudson’s Hope to go to Fort St John.  What a pretty drive it is!  It started POURING half way there but we stopped at one pull out to stretch our legs and took some shots of the incredible Peace River Valley.

In Fort St John we took advantage of being there to sneak into the Real Canadian Wholesale Club and grabbing a couple of essentials we use from there.  We then went to the only decent Vietnamese restaurant in Northern AB that we’ve found;    Saigon Noodles in the Totem Mall.  Mmmmm Pho soup!!!  Seriously perfect ending to our day…cold wet day cure!

We then headed for home.  It was a lot of driving, Ethan watched copious amounts of TV…but we all had fun and made some memories!  We have decided that we are going to go back in a couple of months to the lake and see if we can check out the private campground.  We want to park our RV from June to September somewhere next year and we really like this area.  The private campground would be the only place that allows long term rentals.  It is only a couple of hour drive from GP and would be realistic for us to get off work on a Friday night and head out for the weekend.  Since we don’t own a vehicle to move it around it would be easier to just haul it somewhere and drop it off.  I’m hoping we can afford to do this next year!

Anyhow, long story short…we had a great day and were grateful in the end that we hadn’t gone camping.  With it being so wet we would have been cooped up at our campsite for the most of the stay and Ethan would have gone stir crazy!  As is was we got to see the sites and explore a dam together!  What more could you ask for!
